Background of the Study :
University libraries are vital centers for academic research and learning, yet many face challenges related to resource management, book tracking, and user accessibility. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, traditional library systems are often inefficient, leading to issues such as misplaced books, lengthy manual searches, and inadequate real-time data on resource usage. The integration of IoT technology into library systems has the potential to revolutionize library management by automating inventory control, streamlining book borrowing and returns, and providing real-time insights into resource utilization. This study proposes the development of an IoT-based smart library system that employs RFID tags, sensors, and a centralized database to monitor and manage library resources effectively. The system will enable automatic tracking of books and other media items, reducing manual labor and minimizing errors associated with human intervention. Data collected from the IoT devices will be processed and analyzed to provide librarians and administrators with actionable insights on usage patterns, enabling them to optimize resource allocation and improve user services. Additionally, the system will feature a user-friendly mobile application through which students can locate available resources, reserve books, and receive notifications about due dates and new acquisitions. The adoption of cloud computing will further enhance the system’s scalability, ensuring that it can handle large volumes of data while maintaining high performance and reliability. Prior research has shown that IoT-based systems can significantly improve operational efficiency and user satisfaction in library environments (Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to adapt these technologies to the local context of Makurdi LGA, addressing specific challenges such as limited technical infrastructure and budget constraints. Ultimately, the project seeks to transform traditional library practices into a modern, efficient, and student-centered service, thereby enhancing the academic experience (Olu, 2024; Adeniran, 2025).
Statement of the Problem :
University libraries in Makurdi LGA face several challenges related to outdated inventory management systems, inefficient book tracking, and lack of real-time data on resource usage. Traditional manual systems are labor-intensive, error-prone, and often result in misplacement of books and delayed access to academic materials. These inefficiencies not only frustrate students and faculty but also hinder the library’s ability to optimize resource allocation and improve overall service quality. Moreover, the absence of an integrated digital system prevents library administrators from accessing real-time analytics on book circulation and user preferences, which are essential for informed decision-making. In resource-limited settings, such as those encountered in Makurdi, budget constraints and limited technical expertise further exacerbate these problems, making it difficult to modernize library operations. This study seeks to address these issues by developing an IoT-based smart library system that automates the tracking of books and other resources, ensuring accurate inventory management and improved accessibility. By integrating RFID technology and sensor networks with a cloud-based database, the proposed system will provide real-time data that can be used to monitor resource utilization and streamline borrowing processes. Addressing these challenges is crucial for enhancing the efficiency of library operations, reducing the burden on staff, and ultimately improving the academic experience for students and researchers. The research will focus on creating a cost-effective and scalable solution tailored to the specific needs of university libraries in Makurdi LGA (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To design an IoT-based system for automated tracking and management of library resources.
To implement a user-friendly mobile application for resource discovery and management.
To evaluate the impact of the smart library system on operational efficiency and user satisfaction.
Research Questions:
How does the IoT-based library system improve the accuracy of inventory management?
What are the benefits of integrating RFID technology in library resource tracking?
How does real-time data accessibility enhance student and faculty experiences in university libraries?
Significance of the Study :
